About the pilot study

The study is exploring whether changes to the way bus services are planned, funded and operated could improve public transport across Cumbria.

It takes account of the challenges involved in providing reliable and accessible bus services in a mainly rural area.

The study aims to help develop a bus network that:

  • provides reliable, affordable and attractive connections to jobs, education, services and other facilities
  • supports sustainable economic development and social regeneration
  • meets the needs of different groups of people
  • connects more effectively with other forms of public transport, walking and cycling

The Department for Transport is funding the study. It is being delivered by Cumberland Council, Westmorland and Furness Council, Jacobs and Oxera.

What happens after the engagement closes

The study team will analyse the responses from the questionnaire and the community events.

The findings will help the team assess the available options and develop its final recommendations.
