Work we have completed with Levelling Up funding

We have completed extensive road improvement works on the A595 and A5086, marking a significant milestone in the upgrade of Cumberland’s highways network and infrastructure.

The £14.3 million project, funded through the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, delivered major improvements across 16.5 miles of highway, enhancing safety, reliability and resilience for residents, businesses and visitors.

The improvement programme, which commenced in January 2024, has now been completed and included:

  • 11.05 miles of resurfacing on the A595
  • 6.31 miles of resurfacing on the A5086
  • 910 gullies replaced
  • 185 manholes replaced
  • 5,397 kerbs installed
  • 2,493 metres of edging installed
  • 3,258 road studs installed
  • 64,014 metres of road markings laid
  • 125 streetlights replaced

These completed improvements have delivered a safer, smoother and more reliable road network, supporting local communities and improving connectivity across west Cumbria.
