National Landscapes are nationally protected areas recognised for their natural beauty, wildlife, heritage and cultural importance.
We work with neighbouring authorities, Natural England and National Landscape Partnerships to help conserve and enhance these protected landscapes for future generations.
North Pennines National Landscape
The North Pennines National Landscape was designated in 1988.
The area includes waterfalls, moorland, dramatic dales, traditional villages and historic stone walls. Features such as High Force on the River Tees and High Cup Gill near Dufton were created by geological processes over millions of years.

Solway Coast National Landscape
The Solway Coast National Landscape was designated in 1964.
The area covers much of the English Solway Firth coastline between Rockcliffe and Maryport, excluding the town of Silloth. It is internationally important for birdlife, rare plants and a wide range of habitats.
The landscape includes:
- sand dunes
- salt marshes
- raised mires
- mud flats
- agricultural land

Local nature reserve
We work with local communities and environmental organisations to protect and enhance wildlife habitats and species at our local nature reserve, Millom Ironworks.
