Local land charges

Search for local land charges, request a search, check fees and find out how searches work in different former council areas.

Overview

Local land charges can affect a property or piece of land. They may include restrictions, legal obligations or financial charges that stay with the land when ownership changes.

A search is usually requested by a solicitor during the conveyancing process. It can help buyers understand if there are any matters affecting the property or land before they buy it.

Searches can include information about:

  • financial charges
  • conditional planning permissions
  • enforcement notices
  • Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)
  • highway status and proposals
  • planning history
  • building control history
  • contaminated land
  • other notices, orders or agreements

If the property or land is in the former Carlisle City Council area, the local land charges register is now held by HM Land Registry.
