Afghan Resettlement programme (ARP)

Overview of the ARP, who it supports and how families are welcomed into Cumberland.

Pre-arrival checks

When a family is allocated to Cumberland:

  • Cumberland Global Resettlement Service (CGRS) checks suitability and shares medical information with Public Health
  • relevant details are shared with the North East North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (NENCICB) to make sure medical needs can be met
  • the Home Office and Regional Strategic Migration Partnership (RSMP) arrange transport from transitional accommodation to the property

Orientation

After arrival, a Case Officer supports the family through a two week intensive orientation, which includes:

  • signing the tenancy agreement
  • registering with a GP and attending an initial health check
  • applying for Universal Credit via Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)
  • setting up household utilities including internet, water, gas and electricity
  • registering for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) lessons
  • registering children and young people for school or further education
  • local orientation including area introductions, community support and meeting other Afghan families
  • introductions to UK values, laws, customs and ways of life
