Fumes or gases can come from industrial sites, vehicles, or equipment.
If they cause strong smells or affect your health or comfort, they may be considered a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Common sources of fumes or gases include:
- industrial emissions from chimneys or equipment
- fumes from poorly maintained vehicles or machinery
- gases from commercial fridges or cooling systems
If you feel safe, speak to the person or business causing the problem. They may not be aware of the issue.
Reporting a fume or gas nuisance
If the fume or gas issue has not improved after you've tried to resolve the problem, you can report it to us.
You must complete the witness record sheet showing dates, times and type of disturbance.
Download our Noise or other nuisances booklet for guidance.
We assess complaints based on:
- how strong the fumes are
- how often they occur
- how long they last
- how they affect your use and enjoyment of your home
