Your waste and recycling collections
When you are preparing your bins and containers for collection, please help us by:
- putting your waste and recycling out to be emptied before 7am on the day of your collection (6.30am in the former Allerdale area)
- not overloading the bin or place extra waste beside it, and only put out your bin or container if it is at least a third full
- putting your waste in the correct bin or container and put out for collection on the correct date

Missed collections
We will aim to collect all waste (general and garden) and recycling on the scheduled day of collection. However, sometimes we are unable to make collections due to vehicle breakdown, access issues or weather conditions.
We will not return for one-off missed bins. However, if a street or large number of properties have been missed (or if there has been an access issue) a vehicle will return as soon as practically possible.
If we are unable to return, and you have reported the missed collection, we may take up to four bags of excess general waste or excess recycling in two separate cardboard boxes (plastic, cans and glass in one, and paper and cardboard in the other) on the next collection. We will not take excess garden waste.
Requesting a bigger waste bin
If your household cannot manage your waste using the standard refuse and recycling containers, you can apply for a bigger or additional bin.
This may be approved for larger households, those with children in daytime nappies or those with significant medical waste which relates to a diagnosed health condition that results in excess refuse.
Apply for a bigger or additional bin or call our Customer Services team on 0300 373 3730.
Assisted collections
The assisted collection service is open to you if you have a genuine need for support due to either a short-term health issue or longer-term or permanent disability. It is also available for residents who may need some support managing their bins due to the increasing frailty of older age.
Apply for an assisted collection or call our Customer Services team on 0300 373 3730.
Garden waste
If you have a garden waste bin, you get one bin emptied every two weeks, but any additional bin has a yearly £40 collection charge. You can have a maximum of four garden waste bins.
Subscribe for extra garden waste bin collection
Collections are every two weeks between March and November.
You can also dispose of garden waste at Household Waste Recycling Centres or choose to home compost your garden and food waste. Buy composter and food digesters.
We will aim to collect all garden waste on the scheduled day of collection. Like other collections, we sometimes are unable to make collections.
We will not return for missed bins. However, if a street or large number of properties have been missed (or if there has been an access issue) a vehicle will return as soon as practically possible. We will not collect excess garden waste.
New and replacement bins
Please put your street name and number or house name on your property’s bin.
After the bin or container has been emptied, please bring them in from the kerbside as soon as possible to reduce the risk of them being misplaced or stolen.
You’ll need to pay for a replacement bin if:
- it is lost or stolen
- there was no bin at your property when you moved in
- it is unrepairable, for example - split
- it is for a new build property
You don’t need to pay for a replacement bin if:
- it fell into the back of the waste/recycling vehicle
- it can be repaired, for example - wheels, lid
- the waste collection crew have reported that it has been damaged during collection
Bulky waste
Bulky waste items like a sofa, TV, fridge freezer, can be removed from outside of your property. Check the costs and terms and conditions when you make a booking.
