Evidence of your personal details

Evidence you need to bring to your appointment to prove your name, date of birth, nationality and address.

If you do not bring the required documentation, or do not meet the residency or other requirements, then the notice appointment will not be able to go ahead. You will need to book another appointment and pay the fee again. All documents provided must be originals.

When giving notice, you will need to pay a fee

British and Irish citizens

If you are a British or Irish citizen, please bring the following:

  • Valid British or Irish Passport
  • One of the first 6 documents listed as evidence required for proof of address

Or 

  • Certificate of registration as a British Citizen granted by the Secretary of State 
  • One of the first 6 documents listed as evidence required for proof of address

If you do not have a British or Irish passport

  • your full birth certificate (see below if born after 1 January 1983)
  • one of the first 6 documents listed as evidence required for proof of address

If you were born in the United Kingdom on or after 1 January 1983 but before 1 July 2006

As well as your full birth certificate showing your parents name/s you also need to bring evidence of either one of your parent’s British citizenship or settled status in the UK at the time of your birth (for example - a passport describing the relevant parent as a British citizen or indicating that he or she then had indefinite leave to enter or remain). 

If British Citizenship is claimed through your father you will also need your parents Marriage Certificate. 

If you were born in the United Kingdom on or after 1 January 1983 and after 1 July 2006

As well as your full birth certificate showing your parents name/s you also need to bring evidence of either one of your parent’s British citizenship or settled status in the UK at the time of your birth (for example - a passport describing the relevant parent as a British citizen or indicating that he or she then had indefinite leave to enter or remain). 

Change of name 

If you have changed your name at any point and the names on the evidence documents you provide do not match we would need to see original evidence of how the name has been changed (for example by marriage or name change document). If further advice is required please contact us. 

Evidence of address

To prove your address, please bring one of the following:

  • a valid UK or Irish driving licence
  • a gas, water or electricity bill from the last 3 months
  • a bank or building society statement from the last month. Please note this cannot be a credit card statement or letter from the bank 
  • a Council Tax bill from the last 12 months
  • a mortgage statement from the last 12 months
  • your current tenancy agreement
  • a letter from your landlord (dated within the last 7 days) confirming you live there and including your landlord's name, address and their signature

European Settlement Scheme (EUSS)

If you have EUSS settled status, pre settled status or have a pending application to the EUSS, please bring:

  • Your current and valid passport
  • One of the first 6 documents listed as evidence required for proof of address
  • If either of you are not a British or Irish citizen, please also bring evidence of your settled status, pre-settled status or a pending application to the EUSS.

Your share code

You will be asked to confirm which document you used in your application and then to confirm the details of the document and your date of birth. After completing the GOV.UK process you will be emailed the share code.

Once you have received the share code please forward it to csharecode@cumbria.gov.uk at least 2 days before your appointment, and in the email provide your full name(s), the date of your appointment and your date of birth. The share code is only valid for 30 days.

If any documents are not in English, you will need to get a full written English translation.

If you or your partner are subject to immigration control

In addition to the documents listed above, you will need to bring:  

  • a passport sized photo for each of you (even if only one of you from outside the UK) 
  • proof of your current immigration status (for example, your visa) 
  • a translation of any documents that are not in English

Your marriage schedule will be issued a minimum of 28 days after giving your notice, or if you are subject to immigration control between 28 and 70 days subject to the Home Office.
