If you're setting up a new food business, you must register with us at least 28 days before trading, or before your food operation starts. This includes storing, preparing, distributing or selling food.
You may also need planning permission depending on where and how you plan to operate.
Find advice on Starting a food business on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website.
How to register
You can register your food business online.
Register your food business on GOV.UK
Registration is free.
If you're unsure whether your business needs to be registered or approved (for example if you handle products of animal origin), you can contact us.
Email: EnvironmentalHealth@Cumberland.gov.uk
Telephone: 0300 373 3730
Advisory visit: Allerdale
If your food business is in the Allerdale area, you can request for an advisory visit.
Contact us if you would like to arrange an advisory visit
What happens after you register
Once we receive your completed form:
- your business details (name, address, type) will be added to a public register
- a food safety officer will visit your premises for a hygiene inspection.
- you’ll receive an inspection report and a hygiene rating
Consumers can request a copy of your inspection report by emailing us. We’ll usually provide it unless there’s a legal reason not to.
Keeping your registration up to date
You only need to tell us if:
- the business changes ownership
- the nature of the business changes
The new owner must complete a new registration form.
