Starting a food business

If you're setting up a new food business, you must register with us at least 28 days before trading, or before your food operation starts. This includes storing, preparing, distributing or selling food.

You may also need planning permission depending on where and how you plan to operate.

What happens after you register

Once we receive your completed form:

• your business details (name, address, type) will be added to a public register
• a food safety officer will visit your premises for a hygiene inspection.
• you’ll receive an inspection report and a hygiene rating

The register of food businesses is a public document and details of the business registration can be viewed by the public, at council offices, on request.

Keeping your registration up to date

You only need to tell us if:

• the business changes ownership
• the nature of the business changes

The new owner must complete a new registration form.
