Health and safety at work

Inspecting commercial premises and giving health and safety advice to help businesses follow the law.

Construction activities

Anyone responsible for construction work has legal duties to keep the site safe.

Before work begins, you must:

  • check that working conditions are safe
  • make sure the work won't put others at risk

This applies to all construction sites, regardless of size.

The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015

These regulations help you:

  • improve health and safety in construction
  • make sure the right people are in place to manage risks
  • focus on planning and managing risks, not just paperwork

Visit the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website for more guidance.

Notifiable construction work

You must notify the HSE if your construction project meets one of the following conditions:

  • it will last longer than 30 working days and have more than 20 workers on site at the same time
  • it will involve more than 500 person-days of construction work

Submit an F10 notification form via the HSE website.
