Before you apply
A personal licence makes sure that anyone running or managing a business that sells or supplies alcohol does so responsibly and professionally, in accordance with the Licensing Act 2003.
When you need a personal licence
You must apply for a personal licence, if you:
- are the named designated premises supervisor (DPS) on a premises licence
- want to sell alcohol at a premises that holds a premises licence
- want to get more than 5 Temporary Event Notices in a year
You do not need a personal licence if:
- you are working in a pub or other business that sells alcohol
- you are a qualified club or premises operating under a Temporary Event Notice (TEN)
You can only hold one personal licence at a time.

Who can apply
You can apply for a personal licence if you:
- are aged 18 years and over
- have the right to work in the UK
- hold an accredited licensing qualification such as the Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH)
- have not had a personal licence forfeited within the past 5 years
- have no unspent convictions for relevant or foreign offences (under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974)
You must apply to the council where you live, not where you work.
We will remain responsible for your licence even if you move to another area.
