Self-build and custom housebuilding register information: Allerdale

Local planning authorities have a duty to keep a self-build and custom housebuilding register of individuals and associations who have expressed an interest in purchasing serviced plots for self-build and custom housebuilding.

We use information from the self-build and custom housebuilding register as an evidence base of the need for self-build and custom housebuilding plots throughout the former Allerdale area. At the end of the latest base period (30 October 2024), our register shows:

Following the introduction of a charge to join or remain on the register in October 2018, households already on the register were advised they would have to pay a charge. All households on the register declined to pay the charge, and were removed from the register. After a review of the policy, the charge was removed in September 2019 and households were given the opportunity to re-apply to join the register.

Preferred location for self-build and custom building of those currently on the register:

  • Broughton - three households
  • Broughton Moor - two households
  • Cockermouth - one household
  • Dearham - one household
  • Maryport - one household
  • Oughterside - one household
  • Pardshaw - one household
  • Seaton - six households
  • Workington - one household

Some households did not give this information, and some households nominated more than one preferred area. Permission was granted for large self-build schemes in Seaton and Broughton / Broughton Moor. 11 of the households have subsequently applied for a self-build grant to build on one of these sites.
