The Dragonfly drama group have announced their latest production will be Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. This fantastic free performance, taking place at Morton Manor Community Centre, Carlisle on Thursday 14 September at 1pm, promises to transport audiences into a world of magic, music, mischief and love.
The Dragonfly group is composed of adults with learning disabilities, and this will be the first time they return to the public stage since the pandemic. The group meet weekly to rehearse and prepare for their performances.
Cllr Martin Harris, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Adults and Community Health said:
“The Dragonfly drama group’s Midsummer Night’s Dream promises to be a fantastic performance with their own take on the classic and it is great for them to be perform in public again after the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic.
“The group offers a great creative outlet that helps people to build confidence, life skills and build lifelong friendships. The public performances also help to build vital community connections.”
All the performers have been working hard to make it a successful show. Sue Rudd, one of the Supervisors at Carlisle Day Services who supports the group, said “The group have chosen to tackle one of Shakespeare’s iconic plays this year, with a Dragonfly twist, and everyone has worked hard to learn their lines and lyrics as well as create backdrops, props and costumes.”
Cast member Aaron said, “We are all so excited to get back on the stage again after having to move online for our performance last year, due to the pandemic.”
Fellow cast member Michael adds “Everyone at Dragonfly loves singing and performing. We hope you can join us!”

Admission to the performance is free, with tickets available in advance by calling Broadacre House on 01228 510137. The performance is going to be held at Morton Manor Community Centre in Carlisle, with curtains up at 1pm. There will be a charitable raffle and attendees may make a donation to support a fund for further performances, activities and outings for individuals supported by Carlisle Day Service.
