Buckbarrow Bridge Reopens – Reconnecting Corney Fell

Buckbarrow Bridge

Cumberland Council is delighted to announce the successful completion of the Buckbarrow Bridge reconstruction project on Corney Fell, with the road officially reopening to all users from 5.00pm, Friday 10 October 2025.

This vital infrastructure project, delivered in partnership with contractor Cubby Construction Ltd, marks a significant milestone in restoring connectivity for residents, businesses, and visitors in the area. The bridge replacement began on 16 June 2025 and has progressed steadily despite challenging weather conditions at the exposed site.

Key achievements include:

  • Installation of pre-cast concrete culvert units and scour protection
  • Construction of masonry blockwork for cutwaters and abutments
  • Completion of the reinforced concrete bridge deck with waterproofing
  • Installation of parapets, drainage systems, kerbs, and road surfacing
  • Final embankment rebuilding and environmental protection measures

The new structure has been designed to be resilient, robust, and capable of serving the community for generations to come.

Cumberland Council extends its sincere thanks to local residents, road users, and stakeholders for their patience and support throughout the works. The reopening of Buckbarrow Bridge restores a crucial route across Corney Fell, enhancing access and safety for all.
