Be Prepared, Stay Connected: Weather Ready Campaign Launches Across Cumberland

Yellow Gritter in Caldbeck during snowy weather

Cumberland Council is launching its refreshed ‘Weather Ready’ campaign, bringing together practical advice, support and information to help residents, communities and businesses prepare for the colder months ahead.

The campaign provides a single source of information on staying safe, healthy and resilient during winter weather, covering everything from travel disruption and flooding to health advice, cost of living support and emergency planning.

The dedicated Weather Ready webpages have been updated and expanded, making it easier than ever for residents to find the information they need before, during and after severe weather. Alongside winter guidance, the pages also include advice on storm preparedness and warmer weather conditions, helping people stay informed throughout the year.

A programme of social media activity and online resources will support the campaign, highlighting:

  • Winter Health and Wellbeing – Advice on staying healthy, warm and protected during colder weather.
  • Emergency Planning – Practical steps to prepare for flooding, power outages and severe weather events.
  • Travel and Transport – Updates and guidance to help people travel safely during winter conditions.
  • Cost of Living Support – Information on financial assistance, energy support and help available across Cumberland.
  • Supporting Vulnerable Residents – Advice on looking out for neighbours, friends and family members who may need extra support during periods of severe weather.

The campaign is encouraging residents to check in on people who may be more vulnerable during winter, including older residents, disabled people, unpaid carers and those who may be living alone or feeling isolated. Small acts of support can make a significant difference during periods of cold weather and severe conditions.

Residents are also being advised to plan ahead by ensuring they have access to essential medication, food supplies, adequate heating and emergency contact information. The campaign will also signpost people to support services if they are struggling to keep their home warm, experiencing housing difficulties or concerned about homelessness, alongside advice for unpaid carers, winter falls prevention and practical help to remain safe, warm and independent at home during severe weather.

Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

"Winter weather can bring a range of challenges, from icy roads and storms to flooding and power disruptions. While we can't control the weather, we can all take steps to be better prepared for it.

“The Weather Ready campaign brings together useful advice and information in one place, helping residents, communities and businesses plan ahead and stay safe. By taking simple actions now, we can all be better equipped to deal with whatever the season brings."

Councillor Justin McDermott, Executive Member for Public Health and Communities, said:

“Winter can be challenging for many people, whether that's managing our physical health, protecting our mental wellbeing, or supporting vulnerable family members and neighbours. Our ‘Weather Ready’ campaign brings together practical advice, local support and trusted information to help residents stay safe, warm and well throughout the colder months.

“Simple steps such as keeping vaccinations up to date, checking in on loved ones, and knowing where to turn for help can make a real difference. By preparing now, we can all help make Cumberland a healthier, safer and more resilient place this winter.”
