Cumberland Council has taken the decision to postpone this weekend's Festival of Curious Things in Workington due to forecasted high winds which will prevent the event from going ahead as planned.
The free family event had been due to take place on Saturday 12 September in Workington town centre. However, weather forecasts indicate heavy rainfall and wind gusts of up to 45mph, creating potentially unsafe conditions for market stalls, temporary structures, street performances and other outdoor activities planned as part of the festival.
Following discussions with event partners and contractors, the decision has been made to postpone the event to ensure the safety of visitors, performers, traders, volunteers and staff.
Cumberland Council spokesperson said:
"We are extremely disappointed to have to postpone the event. However, the safety of everyone involved has to come first. With strong winds forecast throughout the day, it would not be safe to proceed with the outdoor activities as planned.”
While the outdoor Festival of Curious Things activities have been postponed, the Soundwave Takeover at the Carnegie Theatre and Arts Centre will go ahead as planned on Saturday evening with the event starting at 7pm. Soundwave is a West Cumbria-based music charity that supports young people through music, helping them develop skills, build confidence and gain experience performing in front of live audiences. The planned road closures on Murray Road and Finkle Street will no longer go ahead and both roads will remain open as usual.
