Cumberland’s inspiring young people have been celebrated at the first Flying High Awards, held at Muncaster Castle on Saturday 12 September.
The awards, organised by Cumberland Council, recognised the achievements, talents, courage and contributions of children and young people aged 8 to 25 from across Cumberland.
Young people were celebrated across a wide range of categories, including creativity, learning, young carers, music, sport and fitness, health and wellbeing, community impact, personal growth, environmental action, mental health advocacy and youth voice.
The event brought together young people, families, carers, schools, youth groups, community organisations, sponsors, councillors and council officers to recognise the positive difference children and young people are making in their families, schools and communities.
The Flying High Awards were developed with young people from Cumberland Youth Voice groups, helping to make sure the awards reflected what matters to children and young people across Cumberland.
Councillor Emma Williamson, Deputy Leader and Children’s Services, Family Wellbeing and Housing Portfolio Holder at Cumberland Council, said:
“The event was such a joy, celebrating the brilliant young people who make Cumberland such a special place.
“Every young person nominated should feel incredibly proud. Their stories show courage, kindness, creativity, determination as well as a real commitment to helping others.
“These awards are a chance to say a heartfelt thank you and well done to the children and young people who are making a difference, whether that is at home, in school, in their communities or among their friends.
“It was wonderful to hear about their achievements and to see so many people come together to cheer them on. I hope every nominee and winner knows how valued they are, and how much their achievements mean to Cumberland.
“Thank you also to everyone who nominated a young person, supported the event or helped make the evening so special. These awards show young people that their efforts matter, their voices are heard and their contribution is valued.”
The first Flying High Awards were made possible with support from sponsors DNWP and Sellafield Ltd.
DNWP supported the Community Impact Award and Personal Growth Award, celebrating young people who have shown kindness, resilience and commitment to making a positive difference in their communities.
Sellafield Ltd sponsored the Youth Voice Award, celebrating young people who use their experiences, ideas and voices to help shape services, support others and make a positive difference across Cumberland.
