How to apply for a skip, scaffolding, hoarding or fencing permit.

Scaffolding permit

A scaffolding permit allows you to place scaffolding on or over a:

  • road
  • grass verge
  • pavement
  • public footpath

Who can apply

Only registered scaffolding companies can apply.

If you are not already registered, you must register before applying.

Register your company

Before you apply

A permit can be issued for up to 4 weeks. If you need a shorter period, you must state this in your application.

You must also give at least 7 working days' notice before starting work.

Apply for a scaffolding permit

You must include:

  • a sketch showing the dimensions of the scaffolding and the width of the road, footway or grass verge 
  • a site specific risk assessment
  • proof of public liability insurance with a minimum cover of £5 million
