Changes to existing properties
You may need to apply for street naming and numbering if you want to change an existing official property name or number, or if a building is altered to create new addresses.
Naming a private house
If your property already has an official number, you can also give it a name as long as it does not duplicate another property or the street name.
You do not need to apply if the name is not intended to form part of the official address. The property number must still be displayed and used in all correspondence.
Example address format:
My House
1 My Road
Town
Postcode
Numbering new or additional properties
New properties may be built on infill land, large gardens or sites of previously demolished buildings.
Where possible, new properties are numbered within the existing sequence. If a new property replaces a demolished building, it normally keeps the original number.
House names are only used only where numbering is not practical.
Renaming or renumbering an existing property
You must apply if:
- your property has an official name instead of a number and you want to change it
- you want to change an existing official name or number
- a building is being subdivided into multiple units
Fees usually apply for these requests.
