Street naming and numbering

Apply to name or number a new street or property, or to make changes to an existing property.

What happens after you apply

Once we receive your application and payment, we will start to process your application and keep you informed of progress.

Assessment and decision

We check that your proposal:

  • follows addressing standards and our policy
  • is logical and does not duplicate existing names
  • will work for emergency services and delivery providers

We may consult local representatives if new streets are proposed.

Your application can be approved if it meets the criteria and there are no valid objections.

If approved, we will notify:

  • Royal Mail (for postcode allocation)
  • emergency services
  • relevant council services
  • other necessary organisations that rely on address data

Royal Mail is responsible for allocating postcodes. Once a postcode is issued, you may need to contact Royal Mail to activate it for use.

How long it takes

In most cases applications are processed within 28 working days.

Proposals that include new streets may take longer due to consultation.
