Commemoration for the Armed Forces
We recognise and remember the armed forces community and their contribution to society, past and present.
Through local initiatives, we raise awareness and show support for:
- serving personnel
- veterans
- forces families
- cadets
The Armed Forces Covenant supports events such as Remembrance Sunday and Armed Forces Day.
Armed Forces Day
Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to show support for the armed forces community, celebrate those serving, veterans, families and cadets, and raise awareness of their role.
The next Armed Forces Day is Saturday 26 June 2027.
Remembrance Sunday
On Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, we remember and honour the service and sacrifice of the armed forces community, past and present.
All council buildings will observe the national two-minute silence at 11am on both days.
Local remembrance services will take place across Cumberland. Check local listings for details of services in your area.
There are planned road closures in Harrington, Workington, Millom, Whitehaven, Carlisle and Egremont for Remembrance parades on Sunday 8 November. Check planned road closures routes on the one.network roadworks website.

War Memorials
The War Memorials Trust provides advice on protecting and conserving war memorials across the UK. It also offers grant schemes to support the repair and maintenance of war memorials.
