Food and the Environment

Food contributes to one third of our global carbon emissions, therefore this theme is intrinsic in many of the other aspects of the strategy.

Carbon emissions in the Food System

Low carbon food options will be promoted by the Partnership, e.g. consumption of higher quality meat (in smaller portions) and more vegetables, which are locally produced and seasonal where possible.  Less intensive agricultural methods are key to soil regeneration and biodiversity net gain and as such, these will be encouraged.  Public service providers e.g. care homes will be encouraged to procure food locally, thus reducing their carbon footprint.

Reducing food waste

Redistributing excess food from producers and businesses will support those in need and prevent food waste.  Raising awareness of food waste will be undertaken via campaigns such as love food hate waste.  The viability of supporting farmers to “grow a row” of vegetables will be assessed and potential routes to market investigated.  Both home and community composting will be promoted.
