Older people and becoming homeless
If you are older and finding it difficult to remain in your home, there may be housing options that allow you to continue living independently with additional support.
The right option will depend on your needs and circumstances.
Housing options for older people
You may be able to move to accommodation that is designed to support independent living.
This could include:
- sheltered housing
- extra care or supported housing
- other accommodation suited to your needs
These options can help you live independently while having access to support if you need it.
What sheltered housing is
Sheltered housing usually provides:
- a self-contained flat or apartment
- an alarm system for emergencies
- access to support from onsite or visiting staff
- shared facilities such as communal areas
Staff are there to check on your wellbeing and respond in an emergency, but they do not usually provide personal care.
Support available in your home
If you do not want to move, or if you move into sheltered housing, you may still be able to get additional support.
This could include:
- help with daily tasks
- personal care
- support with managing your home
Support is usually arranged through social care services and will depend on your needs.
If you need more support
If you need a higher level of care, you may wish to consider accommodation that offers:
- regular care and support
- help with meals and daily living
- more structured support services
These options are sometimes referred to as extra care or very sheltered housing.
