Access local history resources, family history records and archive collections at Carlisle Library.

Local studies copies and fees

If you cannot visit our local studies library in person, you can use our remote enquiry service. We can carry out limited searches, provide copies of some materials and answer general questions about our collections and services.

Use the remote enquiry service

We can provide one specific search of up to 30 minutes free of charge for each customer within a 6 month period.

Requests for parish register or newspaper searches must include:

  • the date, month and year
  • details of the entry or article you want us to find

Request copies

Where relevant, we can provide scans of:

  • documents
  • photographs
  • published pages

Copies cost £1 per copy.

For publication-quality copies, you will need to make an appointment to visit the library in person. If this is not possible, contact the library.

Research and digitisation

We do not provide a digitisation service.

It may be possible to arrange digitisation of specific documents through the Cumbria Archives.

We may be able to carry out further research on your behalf for a fee of £54.90 per hour, charged pro rata.

Contact the library in the first instance.

You can arrange for a private records researcher to undertake research on your behalf for a fee. View the list of private researchers on the Cumbria Archives website.

Library Service copyright declaration

If you request or take digital copies of documents or microforms, you will be asked to complete a copyright declaration.

We will be unable to supply copies until:

  • payment has been made
  • a completed copyright declaration has been received
