Priority gritting routes
Our Winter Policy works on a preventative process by pre-salting the network with salt prior to bad weather.
Our Primary roads are gritted within 5 hours of a decision to salt the roads. Primary roads are those which carry a large volume of traffic and link the major economic centres in the county and the region or serve more local needs, but still carry significant volumes of traffic.
Wherever possible the Primary roads will be pre-treated before 8am. Primary roads account for approximately one third of the road network in Cumberland.
We also have Priority 3 routes, although these are only treated during extended periods of ice/snow.
Part of the network, known as the CNDR network, in Cumberland is managed and maintained by Connect Roads, on behalf of Cumberland Council. Connect Roads treat the sections shown in orange on the map below.
