Hot and sunny weather

Practical advice and links to help you prepare for and stay safe during hot and sunny weather.

Water safety

When the weather gets warm, many people understandably head to our rivers and lakes to keep cool. Taking a few simple steps can keep you and others safe.

Be wary of hidden dangers under the water and cold water shock, which can both get even strong swimmers into difficulty.

If you find yourself in trouble in the water, remember Float to Live:

  • tilt your head back with ears submerged
  • relax and breathe normally
  • move your hands to help stay afloat
  • spread your arms and legs out
  • once your breathing is controlled, call for help or swim to safety

If someone else is in trouble in the water:

  • call 999 for the emergency services
  • tell the person to float on their back
  • throw them something that floats

Multi-agency patrols will also be taking place throughout the Lake District to educate, inform, and make sure people enjoy the area responsibly. Find more safety information at Cumbria Fire.

Paddleboarding

Paddleboarding is growing increasingly popular as a great way to enjoy the outdoors and keep fit.

Whether you're a seasoned boarder or a newcomer, it's worth brushing up on our tips to stay safe:

  • if you can, always go with a friend - it's more fun, and they can help you
  • bring a waterproof pouch when bringing your phone
  • avoid offshore winds which will blow your board far out to lake
  • always tell someone where you're going and when you'll be back
  • wear suitable clothing such as a wet or dry suit with a buoyancy aid or life jacket
  • use the correct leash to stay connected to your board
  • get the appropriate training the learn the right technique
