Gambling premises licences and permits

Applying for a gambling premises licence or permit, and what you need to do.

Who can apply

You need a premises licence or permit if you want to offer gambling activities in Cumberland.

Gambling premises licences

You need a premises licence if gambling is the main activity. This includes:

  • betting shops and race tracks
  • bingo halls
  • adult gaming centres (AGC)
  • family entertainment centres (FEC)
  • casinos (not permitted and no existing operators)

Each licence has conditions you must follow.

Gambling permits

Permits cover lower-risk or supplementary gambling activities. These include:

  • club gaming permits
  • club machine permits
  • alcohol-licensed premises gaming machine permits (such as pubs)
  • unlicensed family entertainment centre permits
  • prize gaming permits

You do not need a permit for machines already allowed by a premises licence.

We also register small society lotteries.
