Involving people in recruitment
What this work was about
People with lived experience played a stronger role in recruitment. The focus was on understanding how candidates communicate with people and build relationships, not just how they perform in a formal interview.
What people told us
People paid close attention to whether candidates listened, how they spoke with others, and what it felt like to talk with them.
“Being part of the interviews made me feel that my experience was valued. I could see things others might not notice, and that felt important.”

What changed
Insight from people with lived experience helped shape recruitment decisions and reinforced the importance of values, communication and relationships. Work is now underway to create consistent materials so this approach becomes routine.
Why this matters
Recruitment decisions affect people’s lives every day. Involving people helps make sure staff are appointed not just for their skills, but for how they work with others.
