Carers Forum: a consistent space where carers shape change

What this work was about

The Carers Forum is a regular and accessible space where unpaid carers, staff, partners and elected Members work together to improve support.
Carers told us they wanted clearer information, better communication, and a stronger connection between health and social care.

What people told us

Carers spoke about feeling isolated, struggling to get clear information, and assessments that sometimes felt rushed or impersonal. They also shared what helps: being listened to, having clarity, and seeing action follow what they say.
“I was sceptical when first coming along if anything would happen… overall my opinion has changed and things are moving forward positively.”
— Carer

What changed

Carers shaped the revised Carers Charter, practice principles and ways of working. Their insight also led to immediate improvements in accessibility and improvements to commissioned services.

Why this matters

Carers’ experience is now influencing decisions in more direct and practical ways. This helps support feel clearer, kinder and more joined up.
