Understanding multiple disadvantage: Malcolm

What this work was about

We worked with people with lived experience of multiple disadvantage to co‑create Malcolm, a fictional character shaped directly by real stories.

The aim was to help staff understand what life can feel like when someone is dealing with homelessness, trauma and fragmented support.

What people told us

People spoke openly about fear, trauma and what it feels like to be ignored or given up on. They shared what daily survival can involve, including humour, coping strategies and, at times, numbness.

“When people give up on you, you give up on yourself.”
Person with lived experience

What changed

Better understanding leads to more compassionate and effective practice, especially for people whose lives don’t fit neatly into services.
