Cumberland Council will be commencing a series of essential highway improvement works in Carlisle from Monday 9 February 2026, aimed at enhancing safety, accessibility, and the overall efficiency of the local road network.

Following the Highways and Transport Board Strategic meeting last week (Thursday 29 January), Cumberland Council is reminding residents to take advantage of 18 new and enhanced bus routes now operating across the area.

A lease operator is being sought for The Old Bank in Millom with the chance to express interests going live today (Monday 2 February 2026). 

Cumberland Council is extending its sincere thanks to The Carlisle Ramblers & Fellwalking Club for their valuable contribution to keeping parts of Carlisle clean and litter free as part of the council’s Litter Champions campaign.

Following last week’s meeting of the Highways and Transport Strategic Board (Thursday 29 January), approval has been granted for how Cumberland Council will allocate the £27.348 million of highways maintenance funding received from the Department for Transport for 2026/27.

Cumberland residents who want additional garden waste collections are being urged to sign up soon.

Despite the heavy rainfall experienced throughout December, which affected our planned surfacing schedule, the team continued to make strong progress across the project. All nine drainage networks are now substantially complete and more importantly fully operational, an important milestone as we move into the final stages of construction.

Following the Highways and Transport Board Strategic Meeting held on Thursday 29 January, Cumberland Council has reiterated its strong support for much needed improvements at the Brigham/Broughton junction.
